The Sony BDP-N460 is a profile 2.0 Blu-ray Player launched in direct competition to similar products from LG, Panasonic and Samsung.
Introduced in October 2009, the Sony product’s superior range of streaming features and finer audio and video quality helps it canter over others with amazing ease.
The BDP-N460 is slim with a clean organized design with an appealing glossy black front panel. On the left is the Power button; the Play and Stop options are on the right; and the Eject button is on the top.
Though the LCD display is small, it is eminently readable. You have the option of dimming or turning off the display.
The USB Port is easily accessible from below the controls on the right side. Flipping open the front panel reveals the discs loading tray. The USB Port is recessed into the player and located at the back along with other connections. Larger USB drives may not be compatible.
The Video: The BDP-N460 features high quality picture, synonymous with Sony, as it supports both 1080p/60 and 1080p/24 outputs via an HDMI connection. Composite and component outputs are available to be used for connection videos. The BDP-N460 is truly high performer at lower costs.
The Audio: The HDMI is the only way through which you can transfer high-resolution audio formats on a BDP-N460 because of the absence of multi-channel analog outputs. Internal audio coding is available for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. The HDMI cable is used to transfer these high resolutions in their native bitstream form, which enables the receiver to decode them.
Apart from these, you can find an Ethernet connection at the back, which allows you to access Online Media Streaming Services. You can enjoy movies, videos, music, photos and news by plugging in to the Internet.
A built-in software makes up for the lack of built-in wireless capability. By using a Linksys Wireless Ethernet Bridge (WET-610N), you can easily connect your player to the network to enjoy content from providers like Netflix, Amazon Video On Demand, Slacker Radio, YouTube and many more.
Pros: Profile 2.0 makes internal audio decoding possible for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. High Quality image on Blu-ray discs. Easy access to online media.
Cons: Lack of internal Wi-Fi and internal memory. Remote control has no eject button. Internet channels have old contents.
The Verdict: the BDP-N460 Blu-ray player stands solid in the mid-range market. Excellent image quality and streaming media capacity are added advantages.
